By Road

Portsmouth enjoys good road connections, the A3(M) road puts London only 1 1/2 hours away and the M27/A27 connects the city with Britain's motorway network. Once you are in Portsmouth a comprehensive bus network operates across the city and beyond (see below) and if you want to see the rest of the country, National Express, the national coach company, operates regular daily services from the city.

By Rail

Portsmouth is connected through the rail network to London and most of the country's major cities. Go to Network Rail for further information including timetables.

1.-From London:

  • Waterloo Station: 2 direct trains every hour, travel time 1 hour 20 minutes. Get out at Portsmouth and Southsea station.
  • Victoria Station: 2 trains every hour, time approx. 2 hours. You may need to change trains at either Barnham or Horsham. Get out at Portsmouth and Southsea station.

2.-From Gatwick Airport: One hour train direct, one hour train chaging at either Barham or Horsham. Get out at Portsmouth and Southsea station.

3.-From Heathrow Airport: Shuttle bus to Woking (every 30 minutes) and twice-hourly direct train to Portsmouth and Southsea (Time approximately 70 minutes Woking-Portsmouth). There is also a direct coach service fom Heathrow to portsmouth.

4.-From Southampton Eastleigh Airport: Either taxi (about £ 20) or train (taxi to train station about £ 4) and twice-hourly direct from Eastleigh to Portsmouth and Southsea.

By Sea

The city's ferry port offers a number of routes to France, Spain and the Channel Islands. P&O European Ferries operate services to Le Havre, Cherbourg and Bilbao. Brittany Ferries run services to Caen, St Malo and Santander. Wightlink ferries provide car and passenger services to Fishbourne and Ryde on the Isle of Wight. Hovertravel operate a passenger service to Ryde. There are also ferries to and from Gosport and Hayling Island.

By Air

The major London airports Gatwick and Heathrow, both 60 miles (100km) away, and Southampton International Airport are in easy reach of Portsmouth via good rail and rail/coach connections. Southampton International Airport, just 22 miles away, provides services to domestic UK, Channel Islands, French and Dutch destinations.

By Bus

There are two major bus companies operating in Portsmouth, Stagecoach buses who operate services to Havant, Chichester and Brighton and First Bus who offer a comprehensive service around the city.
