Malta is just a few hours’ flying time from most mainland European cities and has excellent intercontinental connections. Choose from scheduled services or charter flights, many of which offer a convenient departure point from European regional cities. Malta has excellent connections to many countries and there are regular non-stop flights by Air Malta and other airlines to London, Paris, Geneva, Amsterdam, Rome, Munich, Frankfurt, Tunis, Cairo, Vienna, Zurich, Moscow and Barcelona. There are also regular ferry services from Pozzallo and Catania. In view of the busy tourist season, it is advisable to book early. Sliema, meaning 'peace' was once a quiet fishing village across Valletta's Grand Harbour. Today you will find several of Malta's most recently built hotels there. Sliema offers dazzling views of Valletta during the day, as well as in the evening. The vast promenade along the coast is popular among locals for social gatherings and evening strolls. Neighbouring Sliema are St. Julian's and Paceville, which form Malta's main tourist centre. The scenic Spinola Bay in St. Julian's houses traditional fishing boats and is surrounded by restaurants which are popular for open air dining by the sea. Paceville, an extension of St. Julian's, is Malta's main nightlife centre where there are clubs, bars, casinos, restaurants and café's. The elegant strand promenade bordering the Creek is popular with Sunday strollers, who like to observe other people, and be observed, in turn as they pass by. Sliema is one of the major shopping areas in Malta. You will find many major shops, restaurants and bars. Tower Road and its neighbouring streets make up the fashionable district, with numerous shops, boutiques, banks and small restaurants. Ghar-id-Dud is the haunt of families with children and people from all walks of life. From here another seaside promenade follows the shoreline up to St. Julian's Bay. ST. JULIANS is an extension of Sliema. It started as a small fishing port around the two bays of Spinola and Balluta: but like Sliema it is now a major residential town and tourist centre. Hotels of all categories abound, particularly at Paceville, where a high-class Casino, amusement halls, discotheques and night-spots provide entertainment for the thousands of youths and foreign visitors who frequent the locality. |
