School

Our partner school is located in the center of Cork City, on the banks of the River Lee. The train station is a 10-minute walk away and the main bus terminal is just across the river. The school consists of two buildings with a total of 18 classrooms and a patio area for students to relax.  A business center available for all students participating in the Executive Business Programs.

Founded over twenty five years ago, our partner school is a family run organization that takes much pride in the service and personal contact provided to each client. The school is member of the Quality English Schools network and was the first school in Ireland to be accepted into this network. All QE schools provide high quality English language training and offer a high degree of personal service and individual attention.

Cork School Reception

Students have a Placement Test and orientation session on their first day. They are familiarized with the timetable and the program of activities, the layout of the building and the facilities provided. Following the placement test, students are assigned to a class with students of similar English Language ability and requirements.

 Standard General English Course (20 lessons per week)

This course is designed for students wanting to improve their level of English and fluency, whether it be for their studies, career or personal development. By the end of the course, the student will have improved their knowledge and use of grammar, increased their vocabulary range and use, have better oral, aural and pronunciation skills, improved their written work and be able to read and better understand written texts.

Students will learn all the essential areas of language & grammar through task-based methodology. All four language skills are given the appropriate class time through the application of the school’s academic syllabus.

Intensive English Course (28 lessons per week)

As above, for the morning class. The additional 8 hours in the afternoon are devoted to speaking. There, students wishing to focus on improving their oral fluency can discuss and debate a wide variety of topics while an experienced teacher facilitates the conversation, encourages the students and corrects errors. It also gives the student the opportunity to further build on their vocabulary and put into practice what they have learned in the morning class.

 Standard General English Course PLUS 5 or PLUS 10 (25 or 30 lessons per week)

This is a combination of the Standard General English Course (20 morning lessons) plus One-to-One specialized classes in the afternoon. These One-to-One classes allow the student to receive the exclusive attention of the teacher and focus on precise needs including:
- General English such as fluency development, pronunciation, vocabulary building, etc.
- Business English such as the language of meetings, presentations, negotiation and email English, etc.
- Exam preparation for the Cambridge suite (FCE, CAE, CPE) and TOEIC, IELTS, BEC or TIE.

 Business English Courses ( 20 or 28 lesson per week)

English has been established as the international language of commerce and is  essential in the modern business world. Our courses are designed for professional business people, as well as students, wanting to improve their English communication skills in a business context. Potential students need to have, at minimum, an Intermediate English level in order to join the class.

General/Intensive Business English Courses: 20/28 lessons per week.
These courses consists of an initial interview, testing and needs analysis. The course involves business English modules (Theory and Practical), Project work and Language skills development. The focus is on the development of the four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) in a business context. Students can choose between the General or the Intensive Business English Course.

Cork Multimedia Centre

The course content includes: the language of negotiation, Meetings and discussions, Preparing presentations, Telephone communication, Describing trends, Report writing, Drafting of business letters, faxes and emails, Socialising, TOEIC and many of the topics and situations which students and practicing business people will encounter in their careers.

 Executive Plus Course (28 lessons per week)

This new 2-week course has been designed to meet the needs of those students who require professional English for the workplace. Focus is placed on the development of four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in a business context. Areas covered will include:

- Drafting of business letters, faxes and emails
- Meetings and discussions
- Telephone communication
- Report writing
- Socialising

Classrom in Cork

As it is becoming commonplace to see a T.O.E.I.C. (Test of English for International Communication) score included as part of job descriptions and jobs offers in large companies, the school offers T.O.E.I.C. preparation as part of the course. Students will have the opportunity to take the test on the final day of the course. The school is the approved testing centre in Cork, licensed to administer the TOEIC test.

One – to – One Lessons (15 / 20 lessons per week)
This course is designed specifically to meet the client's particular needs. One-to-One and Two-to-One courses offer the most rapid, relevant and cost effective form of Language Training. Each client is asked to complete a Needs Analysis Questionnaire prior to arrival. This allows us to design each course to meet the precise linguistic requirements of the participant in order to maximize the available time.

 Cambridge Examination Preparation Courses (20 lessons per week)

Increasingly, English language students find that they require a certification in English, whether for professional or academic reasons. The Cambridge preparation course can help you to get it. Cambridge exam preparation courses are offered three times during the year and the local test centre is in Cork.

Our examination courses prepare students for all the components of the examinations: Reading, Use of English, Comprehension, Listening Comprehension and Interview. Students will complete sample papers and examination practice.

Work Experience Program

The Work Experience Program is specially designed to enable the student to combine learning English in an excellent language school with practical work experience. This program consists of two parts: the first, is an English Course (General or Intensive) during a minimum of 4 weeks. The second, is work placement within a company or organization specially chosen to match, as closely as possible, your profession or field of study.

Details:
- Level of English: Good Intermediate (students will be tested prior to acceptance)
- Minimum age: 18
- Available from September to June.
- Minimum 4 weeks English Course (20 or 28 lessons per week)

The school offers work placements in a large number of workplaces covering a wide range of professions including: Agriculture, Health & Social Services, Politics, Business Administration, Hotel & Catering, Retail, Computing, Import & Export, Sales, Economics, Law, Secretarial & PA, Engineering & Technical, Marketing & Advertising, Tourism & Leisure, Finance & Accounting, Media & Communications, Voluntary Organisations.


Dates
  • General English courses start every Monday throughout year (Tuesday if Monday is bank holiday)
  • Minimum duration 1 week except special courses
  • The school is open from January 2nd until December 19th, 2008. The following are public holidays when the college will also be closed. The school provides an activity in lieu of classes on each of the days during the college term: January 1st, March 17th, March 24th, May 5th, June 2nd, August 4th, October 27th, December 25th and December 26th.

Activities

The school offers activities for adults, nearly every day, throughout the year.  Some activities do incur a cost which would be between EUR5 – EUR35 (to cover visits and transport costs but the school will always place a guide with the students, free of charge). The following is a sample activity program for the adult courses:

Sunday: Arrive in Cork
Meet with your host family and go home for well-deserved rest.
Monday: Tour of Cork City.
Afternoon orientation visit of Cork City. Free.
Tuesday: Cork City Gaol
Walk and visit of this prison building from the 19th century. Exhibition and audiovisual display included. Approx 10EUR.

Cork Castle 
Wednesday: Conversation class / Pub evening
A free enjoyable and hugely popular additional FREE afternoon lesson. Evening: Pub evening with other students and teachers.
Thursday: University College Cork and Glucksman Gallery
Visit of the famous University opened by Queen Victoria. Free.
Friday: Ten-Pin Bowling. Approx EUR5.
Saturday: Full day Excursion to Killarney
For centuries, famous poets and writers have yielded to Killarney's glamour. There is every romance. Killarney is not merely pretty but has a serene majesty in its beauty. Approx EUR35
Sunday: Family Day. A family day where the student spends some quality time with his/her host family.
 Visit to the city of Cork
Airport transfers: There is no charge for transfers to and from Cork Airport for students staying in host family accommodation. If a transfer is required for other accommodation types, there is a charge of € 35 per transfer.
