Shanghai

Learn Chinese - Mandarin and take a language course at our language school in Shanghai and experience the largest city in China. High quality in combination with a professional atmosphere assure good results.

As a result of its location on the river banks of the Huangpu River and the east Chinese ocean Shanghai has seen rapid growth in the past years with an estimated nearly 19 million inhabitants at present.

Today the city is at the forefront for China to become a first world country and maybe one of the most symbolic icons of the swift change from communism to capitalism.

Highlights of this metropolis include Xu Jia Hui, China’s equivalent to Times Square, where neon lights, shopping malls, and restaurants reach one of the highest densities and vie for the attention of the passerby or “The Bund ”, a pristine walkway and park along the river. Further famous landmarks are the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the new area of Pudong .

If you should arrive through Pudong International Airport, get adapted to the speed of the city right away by taking the only publicly available magnetic levitation train Maglev which will take you into town from Pudong Airport at a maximum speed of 431 km/h.

Should you need a bit tranquility visit the Jade Buddha temple or relax in the century park in Pudong.

Chinese language
The language which is subject to all our courses is Mandarin which is the official language of China. Different parts of the country have different dialects. The Beijing dialect is very close to Mandarin and can be understood by Chinese language learners. The Shanghai dialect on the other hand is different from Mandarin and can’t be understood easily by most foreign students unless they spend a long time in Shanghai. The most famous dialect is Cantonese, which is the dialect from Hong Kong and Guangdong Province. Learning Mandarin is very different from all western languages. For one, the grammar is so unlike that of any western language, some people say that Mandarin has no grammar. However, the most difficult to learning Mandarin are Chinese characters (which we don’t focus on in the beginning) and pronunciation, especially the four tones. There is a standard transcription of Chinese called pinyin, which is used in the beginning at Mandarin House to teach students.
Visa Information
To be able to enter China, foreigners need two documents: a valid passport (minimum valid for 6 months after entry) and a visa.

L-Visa:
Our partner school advises to apply for a tourist L visa, which is valid for 30 to 90 days. Once in China, you can extend the L visa once for another 30 days by yourself.

F-(Business)Visa:
In China further prolongation or changing into a business F visa is possible, but only through agencies. These agencies can be mediated by our partner school.
From Home:
If you should insist on applying for an F visa in your country of residence, our partner school can also issue a letter of invitation. A number of conditions are attached to this: (1) The full payment for the course must be done in advance (2) you need to be 18 years or older (3) you need to have a job.

X-Visa:
The student X-visa is only for students studying at state schools and can’t be applied for when studying with our partner school.

It is the student´s responsibility to arrive at the school upon the correct visa. For further information please visit the page of your local Chinese embassy and check the China country information on our visa service page.

Registration
Once you have entered China, you are required to register with the police within 24 hours (there is certain lenience) to obtain a Registration Form of Temporary Residence. If students live in a hotel or serviced apartment, the hotel or serviced apartment will issue this form for them. If you stay in the apartment house of your partner school, our school will help you obtain this form. If you arrange your own accommodation or choose the home stay option, it is up to you to visit the local police station with your landlord. The Registration Form is necessary to extend visas.
