Public Transportation in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a relatively small city. When staying in Edinburgh, most students choose to travel around the city by bus or on foot.

The bus service in the city is one of the best in the United Kingdom, offering a frequent and far reaching service to all parts of the city.

A “Ridacard” – or city bus pass – will allow you unlimited travel on all the city´s red buses. These passes are available only a 5 minute walk from the school and are used by the majority of students at the school.

Public transport in Edinburgh is comfortable, safe and easy to use. Drivers are friendly and helpful.

There are two bus operators in Edinburgh: Lothian Regional Transport (LRT) and Scottish Motor Traction (SMT). Buses run from 06h00 am to midnight. After midnight, there’s a night service.

Prices range from 0.80 GBP to 1.00 GBP (03 GBP for night buses; kindly note that passengers must give the exact change to night buses drivers). Different travelcards offer reduced rates. Lothian Buses offer the Day Saver travelcard with unlimited travels on all lines during one day for 2.30 GBP. The company also offers weekly travelcards (15 GBP) and monthly travelcards (45 GBP) for unlimited travels.

First Edinburgh also offer daily (FirstDay), weekly (FirstWeek) and monthly (FirstMonth) travelcards with unlimited travels in Edinburgh and its area. Prices vary according to travel zones and type of card (prices indicated are estimated prices for your information).

All Lothian Buses cards can be bought at Waverley Bridge Ticket Centre. Waverley Bridge is open all week from 08h30 to 17h30 in summer and from 08h30 to 16h00 in winter.

Taxis

They are easily recognizable as most of the vehicles are black. You can hail a taxi on the streets but we recommend you to go to a taxi rank. Taxi drivers must have their license clearly visible. City Cabs and Central Radio Taxis are the main taxi company in Edinburgh. Fares are quite expensive (about 1.80 GBP per km / 2.30 GBP per mile). The custom is to give a 10% tip to the driver.
