How to get around Auckland & Wellington

New Zealand benefits from an important bus network. Intercity is the main bus operator on both North and South Islands. Newmans (North Island) and Mt Cook Landline (South Island) are the main bus operators on each island.

There are not many train connections in New Zealand. Most of the time, trains are cheaper than buses. KiwiRail is the main train operator in New Zealand.

Highways are in a good state and well signposted. As distances are relatively short, it is recommended to hire a car to get around the country (remember, you will drive on the left!). As hiring cars is very common, you will find a lot of offers.

There is also a large offer in sea transport. Interislander is the main ferry operator between Wellington, in the North Island, and Picton, in the South Island.

Lastly, you can opt for hiring a bike which is a cheap option to go here and about. You can choose to hire a bike daily, weekly or monthly.
