Highways are in a good state and well signposted. As distances are relatively short, it is recommended to hire a car to get around the country (remember, you will drive on the left!). Interislander is the main ferry operator between Wellington, in the North Island, and Picton, in the South Island. Lastly, you can opt for hiring a bike which is a cheap option to go here and about.
