CELTA
& DELTA Teacher Training in Sevilla
|
 |
"I completed my
CELTA teacher training course in Sevilla, Spain, with the extremely
friendly and expert assistance of StudyGlobal. The course was
very professionally coordinated and I learnt a huge amount from the
CELTA tutors, staff, other teachers and fellow teacher-trainees. It
was a fantastic experience that I would recommend to anyone looking
for an intense but stimulating and very enjoyable educational
qualification.
Of vital importance, and what I am
particularly grateful for, is the comprehensive information about
the course and assistance with accommodation provided to me by
StudyGlobal both before and throughout - their willingness and
ability to answer all my queries was a great help and enriched my
experience greatly, so thank you!"
-- Monique Ward, New Zealand / CELTA Sevilla, Spain
"I
went to Seville, Spain, to study the DELTA
in late 2004. My course and accommodation were organised by
StudyGlobal and I have to say that it made the whole process a lot
easier and faster for me. I was the only person on the DELTA not to
have difficulties with my accommodation, which was close to the
school, comfortable and friendly. The DELTA itself was incredibly
intense, but it is definitely worthwhile to further my career in EFL
teaching and open up new opportunities." --
Emma L. Smart, New Zealand / DELTA Sevilla, Spain

CELTA
(originally CTEFLA) is the most widely recognised initial
qualification for those wishing to start a career in ELT (English
Language Teaching) and the minimum required qualification for most
serious ELT schools. CELTA is designed for those with no previous
ELT experience, or those with some limited experience who feel the
need for formal training, new ideas and an approved certificate. It
is intended for native English speakers, or non-natives of
near-native proficiency.
CELTA is a highly practical course which provides initial training
in English language teaching to Adults. Successful CELTA candidates
will gain a thorough basic grounding in all areas of modern ELT. It
aims at laying a firm foundation on which a teacher can
build with
experience. The course combines classroom methodology and a
grounding in language and learning issues with guided and assessed
teaching practice. It presents a view of the principles underlying
language teaching and deals extensively with the analysis of English
from a learner’s perspective. |
 |
CELTA courses in Seville are full-time 4-week intensive courses of
approximately 126 hours, of a very ‘hands on’ nature, complying
fully with the UCLES guidelines and syllabus. You will be teaching
from day 2 of the course.
The
CELTA demands a great deal of work, both during and after course
hours, so you should not take on other work during this time.
Cambridge regulations state that candidates must:
-
be
at least 20 years old by the end of the course
-
have
the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective
teachers
-
have
a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables
them to follow the course and complete all the assessed elements
successfully
There
is no formal academic entry requirement for CELTA. However, the
recommended minimum entry requirement is that candidates should have
formal qualifications which would allow entry into higher education
in their own country.
Most
candidates have a first degree.
Selection of candidates is based on the completion of the
application form, pre-interview tasks and an interview. Interviews
are conducted at the School in Seville, in London, or by telephone.
Acceptance on the course is by no means automatic: a rigorous
selection process is undertaken in the interest of candidates in
order to ensure their suitability and a high degree of success on
the course.
Acceptance is at the discretion of the centre.
As
demand is always high you should submit your application at least
3-4 months prior to the course you wish to take.
The
CELTA programme has been designed in accordance to UCLES ‘Syllabus
and Assessment Guidelines. The aim of this initial scheme is to:
-
Develop practical awareness of :
Learners
-
cultural and individual needs

-
the motivation of adult learners
Language
-

students’ needs and level
-
to
introduce language clearly and efficiently to students
-
to
check learning and understanding at all stages of this process
using appropriate techniques
-
the
ability to deal sensitively and effectively with student errors
and gaps
-
to
devise and operate appropriate activities for written and oral
practice in order to develop the accuracy, fluency and complexity
of learner language
-
to
encourage and guide students towards noticing language in
naturally occurring texts
|
 |
Developing the skills of Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing
-
the
ability to develop the four skills using techniques which foster
not only their individual development but also their integration
-
to
select appropriate materials and to have the ability to use a wide
range of techniques to this end
-
to
use and adapt authentic and non-authentic materials appropriately
-
Assessment of the Cambridge CELTA course is continuous. Progress
in practical teaching ability is of the greatest importance, but
all aspects of performance and work done on the course are taken
into consideration for the final grading, including the
candidate’s written work, professionalism, and suitability as a
future member of staff in an ELT context.
-
Candidates are constantly informed of their progress during the
course by written commentary and oral feedback on their teaching
practice and written assignments, and by tutorial. This may be
formulated in terms of passing and failing.
-
Candidates who successfully complete the CELTA course will receive
the Cambridge Certificate. The grades possible are Pass A, Pass B,
Pass, or “No Certificate Awarded”. In addition, the Teacher
Training Centre issue a graded certificate-report. This report
describes the candidate’s performance in some detail and serves as
a vital document to prospective employers.
-
The
Teacher Training Centre in Seville cannot enter into either
discussion or correspondence concerning results or assessments.
Should a candidate wish to lodge any form of complaint, the
appropriate channels for doing so will be indicated to them.

The
DELTA is intended for practising ELT teachers with substantial
experience. The most widely given reason for taking the DELTA is to
open up career avenues to more senior ELT posts for which the DELTA
is invariably required. The most common reaction to the course
itself, however, is that candidates find it tremendously stimulating
and rewarding on the level of personal development. More often than
not it provides a new direction and impetus in their classroom
teaching as well as in their present and future professional lives.
The
DELTA offers you the opportunity to: |
|
-
increase your critical awareness by gaining new insights and a
deeper understanding of the principles and practice of ELT to
adult.
-
examine your current practices and beliefs
-
apply the results of this learning and reflection to your current
professional life and beyond
The
University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES)
'Syllabus and Assessment Guidelines' stipulate that a candidate will
normally:
-
have a first degree
-
have
some formal training in ELT
-
have
a minimum of two years full-time (1200 hours) teaching experience
of ELT to adults within the last five years
-
have
a range of teaching experience involving work in different
teaching contexts and experience of teaching learners at different
levels
-
have
a level of awareness and competence in English sufficient to
complete all components of the course
-
be at least 21 years old
Acceptance on the course is at the discretion of the centre, based
on the above guidelines.
The
following requirements are an integral part of the course programme:
-
120
contact hours between candidates and course tutors
-
10
hours teaching of adult students for whom English is not a first
language. 4 of these lessons must be supervised and assessed by a
course tutor and one must be externally assessed (the Practical
Assignment)
-
10
hours directed observation of lessons. 5 of these observations
must be of 'live' lessons taught by experienced teachers
-
150
hours of reading, research and assignment writing
-
internally and externally assessed assignments and a written
examination
The DELTA Course programme has been designed, in accordance with
the UCLES syllabus guidelines below, to increase the candidate's
awareness in the following areas:
-
The English language and its description.
-
The practice and principles of teaching and learning English
in relation to a wide variety of adult learners and their
learning contexts
-
The nature, role and use of resources and materials
-
The process of teaching/learning and how it can be managed
-
Procedures
for the formal and informal assessment of students, the evaluation
of courses and programmes of work, and the
investigation of personal effectiveness as a teacher in the
class room
-
Opportunities to further the professional development of
candidates as teachers, co-ordinators of other teachers,
and programme administrators
4.
DELTA
The Written Exam
Work
-
there a total of 8 assignments designed by the centre according to
UCLES specifications which integrate both theory and practice
-
5 of
these assignments include the observation and assessment of the
candidate's teaching. Four of them are internally assessed and
externally moderated and one is externally assessed (the Practical
Assignment).
These 5
assignments all follow the format:
a)
Background
b) Lesson plan
c) Teaching
d) Post-lesson reflection
|
Each
of the 5 assignments has a specific area of focus, as follows:
-
2 assignments on Language systems
-
2 assignments on Language skills
-
1 assignment on resources and
materials
-
in
addition, there are 3 assignments which do not include practical
teaching. These explore the relationship between practice and
underlying principle in specific areas
The Extended Assignment
This is a case study of a learner (4000-4500 words). It is
supervised by the course tutors but marked externally.
|
 |
The Written Examination
This consists of one 3-hour examination which is marked externally.
There are 3 compulsory questions, each with 3 parts. Each question
includes ELT-related data. The Written Examination can be taken in
December or June. The DELTA course in Seville is programmed for
candidates to take the December examination
Candidates must pass all three components of assessment: the
coursework (including the Practical Assessment), the Extended
Assignment, and the Written Examination. On successful completion of
these three components, a candidate will be awarded a Pass grade,
or, much more exceptionally, a Pass with Distinction.
A
candidate who does not pass the Written Examination or the Practical
Assessment has the opportunity to re-sit that component, on one
occasion only, within the next two years.
Selection of candidates is based on the completion of the
application form, pre-interview tasks and an interview. Interviews
are conducted at the School in Seville, in London, or by telephone.
Acceptance on the course is by no means automatic: a rigorous
selection process is undertaken in the interest of candidates in
order to ensure their suitability and a high degree of success on
the course. Acceptance is at the discretion of the centre.

designed for teachers who have received previous formal training in
ELT (perhaps the CELTA, Trinity TESOL or the IHC) but may have
little or no experience of teaching English to young learners. The
course may also be suitable for more experienced young learner
teachers, who feel they might benefit from some formal training in
this area.
The course's main objective is to introduce trainees to, and help
them (re) evaluate and (re) consider the main principles involved in
teaching English to Young Learners (YLs).
The
course consists of:
Input
sessions:
20 sessions of approximately one hour and 15 minutes each, amounting
to 30 hours of input time. This will also include observation and
analysis of videos of YL classes.

(pre-lesson guidance and post-lesson feedback) given for each hour
of teaching.
Observation of Experienced Teachers:
Each participant will observe experienced teachers of Young Learners
teaching for a minimum of 4 hours. For each of the hours of

involve the discussion of observation tasks and the trainees'
general progression up that point of the course.
Written work:

These will be set and submitted during the course. A third optional
assignment for a further endorsement of the trainee’s experience,
will be set during the course but can be submitted up to two years
from completion of the course. In addition, there may be homework
tasks set after some input sessions.

It is one of the longest-running and most successful Spanish
language schools in Spain, and one of the largest English
language teaching centres in Andalucia.
The Teacher
Training center was approved by the University of Cambridge
Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) as a centre for Cambridge
courses in 1998.
Facilities
There are a total
of over 35 classrooms, video and lecture rooms, a multi-media
study centre and library and a specialist language
bookshop.
Candidates on Teacher Training courses will have full access to
school facilities, including a well-stocked study room and

Staffing at the
Teacher Training Centre in
Seville
All trainers on our
courses have
been
accepted by UCLES after having undergone an extensive trainer-in-training
programme. Tutors are all practising teachers of English who divide
their time between teaching and teacher training. They are highly
qualified and experienced both as teachers and trainers and
themselves take part in ongoing training programmes, such as
attending conferences and in-house development sessions, in order to
keep abreast of the cutting edge of the ELT profession

SEVILLA
Sevilla, the capital
of the Province of Andalucía certainly is one of the most beloved
places of visitors to Spain. Although today Moorish influence is
architectonically the most evident - Andalucía was occupied by Moors
for about 800 years - it was a cultural center long before. The
fertility of this land and its favored climate with mild winters and
about 3000 hours of sun per year (if you ever have visited in
August, where temperatures can reach up to 47°C, perhaps you
wouldn’t call it "favored"!), made Phoenicians and Carthaginians
settle here. Later came the Romans, like almost to any place in
Europe, and two of their emperors, Trajan and Hadrian, in fact were
born here.
|
Later, Sevilla became
the home of famous and infamous figures of history, the legendary
"Don Juan" started here and went on to conquer the hearts of women
all across Europe, while Columbus started from a port close to
Sevilla to discover the new world. Prosper Merimée's "Carmen", who
couldn't make her decision between the officer Don José and the
bullfighter Escamillo - the consequences you can watch still today
in opera houses - was a worker in Sevilla's old tobacco factory.
This factory serves today as the University, a fact that might give
you a glimpse into the Andalusian talent for improvisation.
When you visit this city, you are in the very heart of Andalusian culture, the center of
bullfighting and Flamenco. Give yourself time and take life easy, as
Andalusians usually do, and interrupt sightseeing from time to time
to have a few "tapas", those typical "small Spanish dishes",
and a glass of sherry in one of the probably thousands of bars in
this city
|

|
The city's warm, dry
climate provides a perfect setting for an outdoor fiesta. Every
Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, thousands of young people go to
the streets in order to "ir de marcha" (to go out partying). The
average night begins at 11 p.m. or midnight. A true night of
partying in Sevilla isn't over until breakfast the following
morning.
