CELTA Teacher Training in Barcelona
|
"I took my
CELTA at the Teacher Training Centre in Barcelona.
It was the best thing I ever did. This past summer I actually got an ESL job to teaching adults in Canada (which is very hard to do). Now
I am teaching ESL to young children in Seoul, Korea. I am loving every
minute of it." --
Marie Fennell, Canada / CELTA Barcelona, Spain
"I'm teaching full time in a community centre in the UK. I
have an extremely interesting and rewarding job teaching ESOL to
Asian women.
To say that I've learned a lot over the last 18 months would be an
understatement, but I must say that the CELTA course stood me in good
stead. I have had
to work hard at over-coming cultural barriers and creating appropriate
resources- most of the students can not relate to Headway, Cutting
Edge etc. Teaching students who don't even have the alphabet is extremely
challenging, as is keeping them engaged in the lessons."
-- Helena
Robertshaw, UK / CELTA Barcelona, Spain
The CELTA is a one-month initial training course. It is aimed at people
with no previous teaching experience or those who are already working
but with no previous training. This highly regarded certificate enables
newly qualified teachers find their first teaching position. It is intended
for native English speakers or non-natives of near-native proficiency.
The Cambridge CELTA is the best known and most widely taken initial
certificate of its kind. It is accepted throughout the world by most
organisations
which employ English language teachers. CELTA is also recognised by
the British Institute of English Language Teaching (BIELT). Every
Centre
is approved by Cambridge ESOL and every course is moderated by an external
assessor. This, in addition to regular standardization meetings, ensures
quality and fairness in assessment.
|
According to Cambridge regulations, if you want to apply for a CELTA
course you must:
-
be at least 18. It is generally recommended that
candidates should be aged 20 or over, but candidates
between 18 and 20 can be accepted at
our discretion
-
have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them
to undertake the course -
have the potential to develop the necessary
skills to become effective teachers and to successfully complete the written
assignments and the assessment of practice teaching
There is no formal academic entry requirement for CELTA. However, the
recommended minimum entry requirement is that candidates should have
a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into
higher education. We may accept candidates who do not have formal
qualifications
if we feel confident that they would be likely to complete the course
successfully.
|
 |
The course is designed to enable candidates to:
- develop
an initial understanding of the contexts within which adults
learn English, their motivations and the roles of the teacher and
the learner
- develop an awareness of language and a knowledge of the description
of English and apply these in their professional practice
-
develop familiarity with the principles and practice
of effective teaching to adult learners of English
-
develop basic skills for teaching adults in the language classroom
-
develop familiarity with appropriate resources and materials for use with adult learners of English for
teaching, testing and for reference
-
identify opportunities for their own future development as professionals in the field
Course Length and Structure
The CELTA
course is an intensive course that runs for four weeks. The course time is
divided between input sessions, teaching practice and feedback, supervised
lesson preparation, observation of experienced teachers and tutorials.
There are 120 contact hours during the month. The practical nature of the
course and the emphasis placed on teaching practice is reflected from day
one. On the first day you are divided into small teaching practice groups
and you teach on the second day. Each group works closely with one of our
tutors and is assigned a practice class of students. These students are
mainly Spanish but can be any nationality. During the course you work with
at least two different levels of students and often three.
Here you have an example of
a typical day:
| Input Session 1 |
09.30 - 10.45 |
 |
| Break |
10.45 - 11.15 |
| Input Session 2 |
11.15 - 12.30 |
| Lunch |
12.30 - 14.00 |
| Assisted Lesson Preparation |
14.00 - 15.30 |
| Teaching Practice |
15.30 - 17.45 |
| Break |
17.45 - 18.00 |
| Feedback |
18.00 - 18.30 |
After 18.30, trainees undertake continued lesson preparation (on your own
or with fellow trainees), written assignments and observation of experienced
teachers. N.B. The work done after 18.30 is not included in the 120 contact
hours, but forms an integral part of the course.
Our aim is to make you a confident English teacher. The tutors give
you lots of help at the start of the course, and while continuing to
support you during the month, you become more and more autonomous. They
will help you to develop the skills to become independent in your classroom
preparation and confident in the execution of the plan. This reflects
the real world of language teaching.
You start by teaching a short slot on the second day and during the
month teach different periods of time up to an hour. You teach different
areas
of the English language systems and skills.
The feedback sessions are designed to help you build on your successes
and learn from your classroom experiences.
The aim of your tutors is not to prescribe one way to teach a class,
but to guide you and give you exposure and practice in different
ways. At the same time, you will be informed about what is at the
cutting
edge of teaching practice these days. With experience and further
professional development, you can make informed choices about what
to do in the
classroom.
Observation of Experienced Teachers
During the month you observe different experienced teachers in real classrooms teaching different levels of students. You
are given an observation task to do to help you focus on particular aspects of the class, the teacher and the students. In addition to this, you always observe
your colleagues teaching in your teaching practice group.
Written Assignments
Over the month you do a number of written assignments according to the
Cambridge CELTA syllabus. The areas covered are
-
the language systems of English
-
reflections
on classroom teaching
-
adult learning and learning contexts
-
All of these
assignments tie in closely with the input sessions and reflect the
developmental nature of the course. You have access to the school library and
your tutor is always available to help you.
At a regional
and national level demand may fluctuate but globally and overall there has
been a sustained high demand for English language teachers. CELTA
certification is the best choice to enhance your employability. The CELTA
course includes workshops dedicated to helping you find the kind of work
that you want, although in any case the Training Center
guarantees job vacancies for its CELTA graduates.
The
Training Center has exclusive agreements with several
organisations that regularly provide employment for trainees that have
completed their CELTA course at the Center in Barcelona.
Most of
the jobs are TEFL summer jobs in locations within Spain or the
UK, although there are jobs available throughout the year as
well. For some of the jobs both, European and non-European
applicants are welcome, CELTA is the minimum qualification
required.
The
work placement service offered by the Teacher Training Center in Barcelona
is for students enrolled on one of their CELTA courses only. This scheme
is not a guarantee of employment.

The assessment is continuous and integrated. Continuous here means that
assessment takes place throughout the course. Integrated here means that
each assessed component contributes to the overall grade and any one
assessed component can cover a number of topics and objectives in the syllabus.
There
is no final written exam.
The three components of assessment are
Teaching
Practice, Written Assignments and Candidates' Professional Development.
Candidates whose performance meets the specified criteria are awarded a
Pass. Those who demonstrate a significantly higher level of achievement
in their classroom teaching skills may be awarded a Pass (Grade B).
Candidates who, in addition to this, demonstrate a significantly
higher level of achievement
in relation to their lesson planning and awareness of teaching and
learning processes may be awarded a Pass (Grade A)

The
CELTA course typically runs for four or five weeks.
That's 20 working days. Some courses will therefore
be a little longer to allow for public holidays (when the school is
closed).
* Five-week CELTA course:
If you think you might find the four-week CELTA too intensive then
join one of our five-week courses *.
The extra week will give you more time to assimilate what you have
been taught in the input sessions and to put the ideas you learn on
the course into practice. The course is identical, but run over more
days.

Thinking of learning Spanish while you're here?
We have set up a programme that is just the ticket.
2 weeks Spanish + 4/5 weeks CELTA + 1 week chill out = 7-week bargain
price package!
And while you are brushing up on your Spanish you will
be given the
chance to taste real life English language teaching by shadowing some
English classes at our school before you start your CELTA.
How will this package benefit me?
You will meet the foreign students in the classes you observe and
see experienced teachers in action. This will help to make your teaching
practice during
CELTA less intimidating and you will probably find it easier to anticipate
and deal with students' language problems during teaching practice.
The Spanish course is 20 hours per week, at any level, in international
groups with other language learners. You will benefit from seeing your
Spanish teachers in action whilst improving your own Spanish language
skills.
The last week of this package is a much needed one-week chill out
period. This time can be used to prepare your CV and start job hunting
(using the
Spanish that you have learnt on the course). If you have already found
a job or don't want to start looking yet you can have a well earned
holiday in Barcelona.

The teacher training center will be happy to arrange accommodation for you during CELTA. For most trainees this is usually a rented room in a self-catering apartment shared with other international students. You will have your own room and access to the facilities i.e. bathroom, kitchen etc.
The intention is trying to find accommodation as near to the school
as possible and catering for preferences, but no guarantees can be
given as it depends on availability at the time of the course.
The
accommodation service booking fee is 45 €
|
 |
Shared apartments:
You will be sharing with students of other nationalities or sometimes
with the owner. In general, the apartments are simple, but contain
basic
amenities (table, cupboards, kitchen utensils, sheets, etc.). Each
apartment has an equipped kitchen, living/dining room, washing machine
or nearby launderette and an iron.
Telephone calls from the apartment
are restricted, and can only be made with the use of a pre-paid phone
card (pick one up at the school).
The kitchen and bathroom are shared,
so it is important to keep them clean and tidy.
Food is not included
in the price as apartments are self-catering.
The price of self-catering
apartments is 13,40 € per night (402 € per month
Host family:
Most the families have been working with the Center for years and
the majority of them live near the school. You will not necessarily
be the only
student staying with the family - some host families have two or three
international students staying with them at any one time.
Host family
accommodation is in single rooms. All rooms are equipped with a desk
or table where you can study. Breakfast and dinner are provided 7 days
a week.
The price of host family accommodation is
206 € per week. (824 € per
month)

The Teacher Training Centre is situated a 15 minute metro ride from the city centre, near the university and the beautiful residential area of Pedralbes. It is next to the Avenida Diagonal and is in one of the most important business and commercial areas of the city. Most headquarters of the largest multinational companies of the city can be found in this area.
Because of the importance of the area, public transport is excellent.
The Teacher Training Centre has its own small private garden where
trainees can sit and enjoy the sun between classes.
Our groups are
small in order to create a very close relationship between tutors,
trainees and students. The Centre is proud of being able to provide
a friendly but serious learning environment for the CELTA trainees.
One of the highlights of the centre is the place where it is situated,
one of the most beautiful and attractive districts in the city. If
you take a walk in the area around the school you will notice that
most people are local, not tourists, and so unlike the centre of Barcelona
you really can experience the city's way of life and, why not! practice
your Spanish.
The centre has air-conditioning and is fully-equipped with photocopying
facilities, computers with free, fast internet access, drinks machines
and a "quiet room" with library where trainees can study and prepare teaching practice sessions in peace. Trainees have free access to the resource books in the library which contains the latest books on methodology and books on supplementary materials.

Barcelona hardly needs an introduction since it is one of the most interesting and lively cities in Europe. Situated on the Mediterranean coast, it has a wonderful climate: hot summers and mild sunny winters. Barcelona's climate and location, together with all the other attractions it offers make it one of the best destinations both for tourists and students.
The city offers a wide range of cultural attractions from the Picasso and
Miró Museums to the Gaudí buildings, the cathedral, the Gothic Quarter etc. Not only does culture stand out in Barcelona but you will also find an exciting nightlife with bars and restaurants on every corner: the atmosphere is friendly, laid-back and stylish.
There's nothing quite like a walk down Paseo de Gracia or the Ramblas - this stretch must be one of the most unique in the world.
The city's magnificent climate means that its streets, squares and parks
are full of people enjoying the outdoor atmosphere and hospitality that the
city is so famous for. Barcelona changes every season and, of course, during
the summer you can enjoy the sunny weather, the sea and wonderful sandy beaches.
|
Near Barcelona:
There are many well-worth-a-visit places near Barcelona and which are within
easy reach. We recommend the sandy beaches and rocky coves of the
Costa Brava, the Dalí museum in Figueras and the Monastery of Monserrat.
During the winter there is skiing in the nearby Pyrenees. An easy day trip
can also be made to the impressive Montserrat Monastery and mountain.
